SLCC musicians row over additional terms

SLCC'07There's a row brewing over live music at the SLCC this year. Slim Warrior appears to have been the first to speak out, when the release agreement for his performances was presented to her, and at least one other pair of performers (Kaoru and Jennie of The Deathline) are also objecting.

The issue here specifically is not actually the terms of the release agreement (which seem to be rather broader than is usual for a performance release), or who the rights are assigned to (Phreak Radio, in this instance), but a matter of timing. You see, the musicians have already agreed to perform, booked hotels, paid conference registration (albeit discounted) and booked and paid for flights. Now additional terms are being imposed on a take-it-or-leave-it basis, leaving the musicians out-of-pocket.

Mardi Gras Coming to the Big Easy on 02/19

Two years ago, when New Orleans was devastated by Hurricane Katrina, Second Life residents banded together to create the Big Easy and Biloxi sims. They raised a generous sum of money to donate toward recovery efforts and since then, the sims have been mostly dormant. Save for the occasional wedding, whose proceeds go to the Relief effort, this is the first large-scale event to take place in a while.

What event am I referring to? Mardi Gras! The festivities begin at 10AM and 6PM PST. Put on your craziest outfit and head to the Biloxi and Big Easy sims for floats, beads, live entertainment, martinis, and more. Proceeds from the event will benefit Habitat for Humanity - New Orleans. You won't believe the activities they have planned...

Richard and Judy Tackle SL

I'm big into the Beeb's past shows, such as Fawlty Towers, Monty Python, and The HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but I'm not terribly up on their current mainstream programming. So it was with some pleased surprise that I received a link to this YouTube video, featuring not one, not two, but three SL residents in their real life selves, on the chat program Richard and Judy, which I understand to be the UK equivalent of the Today Show.

Errol Mysterio, Fizik Baskerville, and Slim Warrior all share the time, explaining to the hosts the basics of SL, and what their particular foci are in-world. It's a wonderful video, and we can all be proud of our three intrepid interviewees -- they've acquitted themselves admirably!

Best quote: "I've got Man Breasts!"

(Thanks, Adri!)

Interview: Adri Saarinen

Hot on the heels of our previous post about the in-world Jonathan Coulter concert, I've got a treat: Adri Saarinen, PR manager for the event, has given us a wonderful interview about her work with PopSci and the Creative Commons group. Thanks, Adri!

SLI: How did you come to be involved in this project?

Adri: Well, I've done some PR for various SL organizations and events, so when Creative Commons contacted Zenigma Suntzu to produce a concert, he contacted me to handle the PR side of things. Zen was contacted because he produced the City Stages concert last winter.

SLI: So you're a team on this; who else is involved?

Adri: Zen as the producer, I'm working on the PR, and Slim Warrior is providing the venue and handling concert logistics. And, of course, the Creative Commons and PopSci.com teams working from their end.

SLI:
How has it been working with CC and PopSci? How much collaboration do they give?

Adri:
CC and PopSci.com have been very involved in the process, mostly consulting through email on things like logo placement. They also, of course, provided the concert budget!

More after the jump!

Jonathan Coulton in Concert!

Great Galloping Grimjack! Popular Science and Creative Commons are co-sponsoring an in-world concert by none other than Jonathan Coulton next week Thursday!

Jonathan who? If you're not familiar with Mr. Coulton's particular brand of musical love, do yourself a treat and head over to his website and have a listen or twenty. You have to love songs with titles like 'The Town Crotch', 'Furry Old Lobster', and 'Beds Hurt My Booty'. You have to; you're required by law to love them.

Best of all, Mr. Coulton operates on the Creative Commons license tip, meaning that his songs are remixable, shareable, and downloadable for free -- but please support your Internet Bard by patronizing his tunes. Did I mention they're also DRM-free?

Adri Saarinen is working the PR for this concert, so if you have any questions/comment/love notes, you may contact her. Joining Jonathan will be SL musicians: Jonathan's concert will be held in Menorca, on Thursday, September the 14th, 2006. You can check out the original announcement here, and a more detailed announcement is here. Rock out with your blog out!
