Give Us Your Podcast Ideas!

We're considering doing a podcast (or 'netcast', as Leo Laporte would have it -- divorcing the idea from the product, as you can listen to these radio-like shows on things other than iPods), and we'd like to know what you would like our podcast to include. We'll likely do interviews and news, but if there's something you think that other shows don't include that you'd like to hear, drop us a comment!

Secondlife.Podcast.com

I used to scoff at people who would listen to nothing but NPR. Those few times that I would tune in, I'd hear nothing but dull people pontificating endlessly about some topic I cared nothing about. This was before podcasts. Suddenly, I found a whole range of topics in which I was interested, mostly having to do with tech. I became a second-level talk-radio convert.

How much better, then, to find podcasts about Second Life? Secondlife.Podcast.com provides a repository for podcasts relating to SL, aggregated in one place. It's part of the larger site Podcast.com, which aggregates podcasts from all over the 'Net. Previously mentioned Secondcast, The Goods, and SLPodcast.com are there, along with a couple of others that I haven't checked out yet, but will. Go listen to the voices behind the avatars; they have lots to say!

SLPodcast.com

There's a new podcast in town, and it's all about SL: the aptly-named www.slpodcast.com. Hosted by Jeremy Flagstaff, the site was once a simple SL-related blog, but has now grown to inlcude an actual audio podcast.

Jeremy has two 'casts up so far: The first, interviewing Mark Barrett (of SLBuzz.com and SLStats.com); the second interviewing Eric Rice (of EricRice.com). Jeremy also mentions his interest in producing an additional (I had to stop myself from writing 'second second life podcast') podcast, interviewing actual coders in SL.

I feel that any 'cast that helps spread the word about SL is a good thing, and this is no exception. Secondcast is always entertaining to listen to, if a little chaotic at times, and now that Torrid Midnight's on hiatus, the future of The Goods is in doubt. SLPodcast has the potential to be a worthy addition to the SLogosphere (heaven help me for using that term). Welcome, Jeremy!

Resident Snapshot: Madison Carnot and Corey Akula

This is the seventeenth in a series of mini-interviews with the residents of Second Life. For the most part, I'll try to leave the responses unedited, except where editing will grant greater clarity.

This one, however, is a bit different. Madison Carnot and Corey Akula are a couple in SL who took advantage of my offer to cover just about anything. I'd have found them sooner or later anyway, as they run a non-SL-related podcast called Bucket ("all other shows 'pail' in comparison"), which has an in-world home at Bucket Beach. That's slightly beyond the scope of this blog, or at least this particular post, but it's worth mentioning. Thanks, Corey and Madison!

Your SL names?: Corey Akula and Madison Carnot, hosts of BUCKET (www.BUCKETpodcast.com), owners of BUCKET Beach and CUBO! at Podshow Island in Second Life.

How did you first come to SL?:

COREY: We both tried out SL over a year ago, but really got involved in the game in April as a huge wave of podcasters came into the game, encouraged by Daily Source Code host (and former MTV VJ) Adam Curry.

MADISON: It was actually my brother that introduced me to SL. That seems like so long ago now!

COREY: And we all got together, hung out at Curry's castle at Doomaekkot, and many of us set up our homes and hangouts around his, promoting our own podcasts. We met so many people in rapid succession....it worked great as a way to get real-world listeners to our show.

MADISON: Yeah, but along the way it turned out that we were just plain old having fun too.

COREY: Then Curry (Adam Neumann in game) bought his own sim (Podshow Island, named after his podcasting web site Podshow.com), moved his castle there, and all of the podcasters in SL have spread out all around the virtual world since. But we all keep in touch and hang out regularly with our listeners and SL acquantances.

MADISON: There are still a number of them concentrated in that general area though. And even though we did eventually move, we're not far off.

Continued after the jump!

Podcast: The Goods

I'll admit it; I have a crush on Torrid Midnight. Well, more specifically, on Torrid's voice, of which I became aware while listening to the Secondcast podcast, as posted previously. Fortunately for me, I can get my Torrid fix by listening to The Goods, Torrid's new podcast, which covers fashion and clothing making issues in SL.

Normally, I'm not much of a fashion hound; when you run around as a big, white, fuzzy werewolf, you're pretty well covered in the area of modesty (no pun intended). But I do admit that I find the whole area of clothing fascinating. The major portion of the podcast involves interviews and candid talk with leading (and up-and-coming) designers in SL, with a section near the end of the podcast devoted to the casters' picks for favorite clothes, stores, or related products and services. It's fun to isten to the guests talk about their likes, dislikes, influences, and problems in getting their designs out and worn. If you're at all interested in making and wearing clothing in SL, please give this podcast a listen. *sigh* Torrid's dreamy...

Podcast: Secondcast

Podcasting is the new Black. There is a metric tonne of podcasts out there, dealing with the gamut of topics from Aliens to Zebras. Naturally, it was only a matter of time before Second Life had its own. Developed and hosted by Johnny Ming, Secondcast is a wonderful example of the breed. Commenting on all issues relating to SL, Johnny heads up this podcast alongside usual suspects Walker Spaight of 3pointD.com, Torrid Midnight of TorridWear and Midnight City, Lordfly Digeridoo of Digeridoo Designs, and Cristiano Midnight of Snapzilla and SL Universe.

Covering a wide range of subjects, these outspoken members of the SL community bring a show filled with insight, sarcasm, and a heaping helping of hilarity (Damn my predilection for alliteration!). Frequently featuring a guest speaker (past episodes have brought Elex Dusk, Mistress Midnight, and our own Aimee Weber, as well as RL guests such as Philip Linden and Randy Moss of the American Cancer Society), the show continues to educate and entertain. It's well worth your time to dive into the archives, and hear how the show has developed over time to grow more accomplished and professional. Now, if they'd only consent to interview werewolves...
