Secondcast is no more

Back when I was a wee newblet (the second time around), Secondcast was the Second Life podcast to listen to. Since that time, almost two years ago, they've recorded 63 total episodes, of which only about 13 of them were in the last nine months. One fifth of the cast, Lordfly Digeridoo, recently pronounced Secondcast dead, after months of inactivity.

While I can't speak for them, I can speak as someone who has been on the show four or five times, with the latest being an episode that never aired in July. I heard the tone of the program change before me. What was once a fun project ended up taking a backseat to their own personal projects. Walker Spaight wrote a book, Johnny Ming and Torrid Midnight went to work for the Electric Sheep Company, Lordfly Digeridoo for Millions of Us, among others, and Cristiano Midnight busy as ever with SL Universe.

Instead of focusing on the fact that it's gone, though, I'd rather relate a happy memory I have from the show. After having been on a couple of times, Johnny asked me to make an episode into a Machinima. It turned into a total disaster. The rest of the cast was really bored and did not hide that fact. They goofed off when I needed screenshots, then got cranky before they were to watch all the Machinima.

Read on for the rest of the story ...

Secondcast: Life Begins at 50

As Walker himself writes here, and you can hear for yourselves here, Secondcast has made it to its 50th episode!

I've listened to most episodes, since discovering it for myself way back when, and have been a fan ever since. Personal fave episodes include the Cristiano/Torrid duet, the "Let's Skate" video ep, and Torrid's "last" episode.

Congratulations, everyone, on your first major milestone. I'll continue to be an avid listener regardless of the lack of wolfie-specific content! By the way, I've included the photo to the right (sent to Secondcast.com by 'Matthew' from Georgia) because it's so damned great; I'll happily remove it at Secondcast's request.

Philip Wins the EDGIE Award

It's always nice to be given an award, if it's in a spirit of honest good will. I've got to say, though, that I've never heard of the Cullinane & Green Report, the people who are giving Philip their first EDGIE Award for creating SL, the 'Next Big Thing'.

You can listen to their podcast here, wherein they interview Philip, and discuss all manner of ways in which SL can be influential in the time to come.

Zócalo podcast - Edward Castronova and Cory Ondrejka

(Left) Edward Castronova - (Right) Cory Ondrejka"Life 2.0 -- Market and Society on the Virtual Frontier"

Edward Castronova is author of the book "Synthetic Worlds: The business and culture of online games" is working on a new book ("The Fun Revolution"), to explain to people who know nothing about virtual worlds why they should pay attention. Cory Ondrejka is the Chief Technology Officer for our own Linden Lab. On the Zócalo podcast (One hours audio-stream, courtesy of KPCC - Southern California Public Radio), Castronova and Ondrejka speak to Ethan Lindsey about virtual worlds.

Castronova says that there are at least 20 to 30 million people using virtual worlds right now, and that number is growing exponentially. "If you're going to argue that virtual worlds have no effect on the real world, that's like arguing that America had no effect on Europe."

CNet podcast: "What's the big deal with virtual worlds?"

CNet recently debuted a podcast interview featuring employees Charlie Cooper, Daniel Terdiman, Neha Tiwari, and Leslie Katz speaking on the subject of MMOs such as Second Life and World of Warcraft (which, to this day, I can't read the name of without hearing in my head "Wheel! Of! Fortune!"). It's a rather short 'cast, with the end result being a sort of bemused, indifferent-seeming "So, why do you crazy kids like this sort of thing?" approach by the host. Given that Daniel Terdiman has been writing about these things for a while now, the whole interview seems a little disingenuous and late to the party, especially since CNet itself has created a virtual headquarters of its own in SL.

It's tantamount to asking "Okay, convince me: why are we doing this again?"

(Thanks, Corey!)
