BloodSpell Launch Party in Second Life 10/21 11am PDT

Hugh Hancock, coiner of the term "machinima", sent me this tidbit about his production company, Strange Company, premiering their feature film cut of their BloodSpell series. BloodSpell is a punk fantasy action-adventure movie filmed in NeverWinter Nights that has been written up by the BBC, the Guardian, Suicide Girls, Boing Boing, USA Today, and a slew of others. For those of you keeping tabs on machinima, there aren't many feature-length films produced in this medium.

That's why he's inviting everyone to be a part of the screening that will take place on Hathead Island on Sunday, October 21st, at 11am PDT, or 7pm GMT. There will be interviews, a special intro, and tons of awesome extras. After the screening, keep your eyes peeled for an interview here on Second Life Insider! Hope to see you there.

* I almost forgot to include a disclaimer about the violence that appears in this film. When I premiered the final episode of the series some time ago, many in the audience complained of the gore. Keep in mind that it's just pixels. If you have a strong stomach, come on over!

Twa Corbis

Okay, that will go on record as my most pretentious and reaching title ever! Regardless, this isn't about two ravens, but rather the fact that Corbis, the famed professional stock photography company, has opened up a gallery in SL, and for once, it's not commerce-based!

Corbis' VP of Technology, Corbis Kamachi, says that the gallery is a way for Corbis to interact with the community and develop a place for discussions on art and photography. No plans yet for selling images through SL. You can visit the Corbis Gallery here. Welcome, ravens!

KODE Gallery Opening/Charity Event in Envy

The new commercial sim, Envy, previously blogged about here, is hosting a cool new event this Friday at 4 PM SLT: [KODE] Gallery's Haemetz Mizser Exhibit, across from Marlys. Haemetz (Lois Lancaster in RL; roncevaux on Fotolog) is a digital painter in the Expressionist mode, though he's developed his own style.

The gallery opening will be held for charity; the artist has graciously deferred all proceeds, and Kode Forager, gallery owner, has selected the Free Arts for Abused Children Program to benefit. This looks to be a fun event, now it just needs you to make it work!

Mera Art

Mera Pixel, host of Building Shelter and a close personal friend of mine (though she'll deny it vehemently if pressed), has created a studio to display some of her wonderful portraiture. I should mention here that her photographs are mostly of her own avatar, and that her studio was created mostly to display her work for her own purposes, not to be advertising for any sort of professional photography work.

Her studio is a fine example of what galleries should be: well-lit, clean lines, interesting use of walking space to encourage wandering. If you like what you see, perhaps you can convince her to start up a photography business -- she does good work!

(Thanks, Mera!)

In the same place

Last night I attended Enjah Mysterio's opening for her Black Drawing exhibition. As she explains in the accompanying notecard, which is available from a dispenser on the left of the door, she made the drawings in response to a friend's terminal cancer, but the opening and exhibition is in memory of her son Steve, who died about a month ago.

This was the most moving of all the events I have attended in SL. The drawings are interesting and unusual, white pencil on black paper, and illustrate Enjah's beliefs about life and death in a most thought-provoking way. Friends and acquaintances arrived and studied the drawings, exchanged small talk, and renewed friendships, just as at a real opening at a gallery.

Slate Magazine

Hot off the virtual presses comes Slate Magazine, where 'Slate' is an acronym standing for 'Second Life Arts and Total Entertainment'. The magazine is well-arranged, with articles on clothing, interviews, a gallery of photographs, some fiction, and everything else in between. The website appears to be a slightly truncated version of the downloadable .pdf of the magazine, which includes more features and photos.

This is a pretty slickly-produced offering, with design that maximizes the space, and interesting reading. Anya Ixchel is the editor of the magazine, which hosts a large array of contributors. Slate magazine is offering advertising opportunities, so now is a good time to get in on the action.

Lego aftermath and gallery

Hank and Rex from ESC News

In the aftermath of last weeks Big Robot on Campus Lego event, The Electric Sheep Company announced one more official chance to enjoy your Alpha Rex Kit. Do to the short time frame building up to the event the Sheep decided to create a gallery on Sheep Island for all you stragglers who couldn't get done in time. To get your creation into the gallery submit by IMing Hank Hoodoo in world.

They are looking for a description, screen shot, and prim count, but also reserve the right to only display an image of your project. The best part is even if you don't get your creation fully displayed in the gallery they are going to send everyone who submits a free Alpha Rex key chain. (I love free stuff.) This all needs to get done by the morning of August 9th, so you better hurry. Oh, and if you don't have an Alpha Rex Kit, you can get one by joining the Big Robot on Campus Group.
