New resident experiences - Lilla Biedermann

Second Life resident, Lillah BiedermannThis is the 17th in a series of interviews that are being conducted with new residents, in order to gauge the effectiveness of the orientation process, and to gauge disparities between the preconceptions and the realities of Second Life. The questions may be tailored slightly for each interview; responses may be edited for purposes of clarity.

I bumped into Lilla at the Shelter, where she was dancing with some other residents, both old and new. Being Danish, she wasn't sure that her English would be good enough, but it was more than good enough for her to communicate.

New resident experiences - Milo Littlething

Second Life resident, Milo LittlethingThis is the 12th in a series of interviews that are being conducted with new residents, in order to gauge the effectiveness of the orientation process, and to gauge disparities between the preconceptions and the realities of Second Life. The questions may be tailored slightly for each interview; responses may be edited for purposes of clarity.

I had a few troubles finding an interview candidate today. Some of them got evasive or skittish when we started asking the questions and ran off before we could finish. Luckily, I met Milo at The Shelter in Isabel, dancing with another new resident by the bar. He kindly agreed to answer my questions.

Who are we? - Dustbin Bedlam

Second Life resident and mentor, Dustbin Bedlam. This is the seventh in a series of largely demographic interviews that are conducted with established residents, to find out more about them and their involvement with Second Life, and to contrast the differences between their views and experiences and those of the newer residents. The questions may be tailored slightly for each interview; responses may be edited for purposes of clarity.

I see Dustbin regularly at my office hours in Hallasan. I originally met him on what I think was his first day in Second Life. "I am a Second Life Mentor," he says, "I have been since I was about 90 days old I think. It has been a great experience. I have met people that are great artists just starting out in SL, it is incredible watching them progress quickly to making new and unique things."

New Resident Experiences - Apex Benelli

This is the second in a series of interviews that will be conducted with new residents, in order to gauge the effectiveness of the orientation process, and to gauge disparities between the preconceptions and the realities of Second Life. The questions may be tailored slightly for each interview; responses may be edited for purposes of clarity.

I met Apex Benelli at The Shelter in Isabel. Like most Sheltered folk he was welcoming, and he was prepared to answer questions about almost anything (however, I just couldn't get his password out of him, darnit!)

Supporting New Residents

There are a lot of factors that make new Second Life residents hang about long enough to 'get it' (whatever their personal and individual version of 'it' is, in Second Life).

Chief among these are a peer group, and the right assistance, information and answers at the right time. The Shelter in Swinside, and its slightly younger sister organization, New Citizens Inc. in Kuula (usually just lovingly referred to as The NCI) are the primary providers of those functions.

Only the most hardy of asocial souls manage without a peer group. Just having people to talk to with some commonality of experience, makes you stronger and more resilient. Both of these establishments provide opportunities for that in spades.

The focus of the two groups is divergent and complementary. The Shelter (led by Travis Lambert) is more focused on social interaction, game-shows, dancing and the like. The NCI (led by Carl Metropolitan) focuses more on information resources, tutorials and classes.

Both organizations maintain safe spaces in-world. Each has a set of rules for behavior and people who break those rules or are rude or cause distress to others will be ejected. The new resident in Second Life is well-advised to visit both and see which suits them more.

How to get your own Resident Snapshot

Well, I knew it would come to pass eventually that someone would ask "Hey, you giant walking shag carpet, how can I be Snapshotted? Shotsnapped. Snapped? Shot? Whatever."

Well, when I first conceived this, I had no thought that it would become a staple of my posting continuum, but there you go. I've done 12 of them so far, with no end in sight. Those of you who care about such things will no doubt have noticed that most of my residents have been Shelterites; this is by design. The best way to get yourself in the Resident Snapshot is to meet me and talk for a while. I experimented with giving random strangers the questionnaire, but there was no impetus there to pursue those posts because I didn't know those strangers. I enjoy telling others about my friends because I know they're good people and would enjoy meeting new folks.

So, if you're absolutely thrilled at the idea of being on this blog, please do come find me and chat me up! I love to meet new people and make new friends, and sharing those friends with the world. I'm a people person! And when I say I'm a 'people person', trust that I don't mean 'I enjoy eating humans wholesale, in a sort of proto-Soylent Green way.'

Resident Snapshot: AllieKat Stovall

This is the eleventh in a series of mini-interviews with the residents of Second Life. For the most part, I'll try to leave the responses unedited, except where editing will grant greater clarity.

AllieKat, her sister Shaunny, and I are the Wolves of the Shelter. It wasn't long after she joined SL that she got her own were avatar, and we've been loping merrily around ever since, nipping at each other's heels and generally howling it up. This one's for you, Allie! Owwoooooooo!

Your SL name: AllieKat Stovall

How did you first come to SL?: I heard about it in the old (and failing) ThePalace and (the never got off the ground) TheManor chat programs. Decided to check it out for myself, now I am hopelessly addicted!

How did you choose your name?: My SL name was an old nickname from grade school, that my friends still use today.

What's your favorite thing about SL?: The people. I have to say that the Shelter has some of the nicest people in SL; oh and you. LOL.

What do you like least about SL?
: Griefers: moronic little teenagers that feel they HAVE to be on the main grid, and then ruin it for everyone else.

Favorite hangout/store?: Prolly has to be the Shelter, or one of the fine shops that I have spent too many lindens at. Oh and KPC, where I am the manager (and sometimes a dancer, whenever I feel like it).

Name one new feature you'd like to see added to SL: Um... lets see. An easier to organize Inventory, or maybe a LAG FREE ENVIRONMENT!!

Shout outs: Reina Quine, walk into Phil's office and demand your ponies! And don't leave till he rezzes them for you =)

Resident Snapshot: Reina Quine

This is the fourth in a series of mini-interviews with the residents of Second Life. For the most part, I'll try to leave the responses unedited, except where editing will grant greater clarity. Get to know these people; they're worth befriending! This one is a little long, so it's continued after the break.

Reina, Reina, Reina. I made the mistake of blogging about the long-gone and lamented Fruit Brute cereal in my personal blog, and now she calls me 'Fruity' all the time. *sigh* Despite that, she's quick-witted, cute, and fun to dance with. She's also in dire need of an embarrassing nickname, so send your comments! *cackling madly*

Your name: Reina Quine

How did you first come to SL?:
I was forced into it by the overlord at the sweatshop I'm 'employed' at. Ok, ok, actually, I was searching MMORPGs on Wikipedia, trying to find something to subdue a friend whining over his boredom with World of Warcraft, and read about Second Life for the first time. I'm still surprised it took me so long to discover SL, being the incredibly hip, savvy cyber-geek that I am! ;)

How did you choose your name?:
Well the first name just instantly popped into my head. Reina is a Japanese name, but not overtly "lolzotaku"-esque. It's different, but still easy to pronounce... not quite as easily typed, though! I get called "Regina", and "Renia" on a daily basis. :) I saw "Quine" on the last name list and couldn't resist a mini-tribute to Willard Van Orman Quine, the late great mathematician/philosopher. Two of my worst subject areas, personally, but I've long been a fan of some of his most baffling quotes!

Newbie Tip: Where Should I Go?

In my last post, I discussed creating and refining your avatar. One of the main points of that post was to mention my belief that it's best to find friendly, helpful faces before tinkering too thoroughly with your appearance. Certainly, your mileage will vary, depending on your personal acumen and temperament. However, if you do decide to follow my advice and search for help, there is one place in particular (besides the official Help and Welcome areas) that you may want to visit: The Shelter.

The Shelter is mainly run by Travis Lambert, who resembles Family Guy's Brian the Dog. Travis is kind and generous, and fun to be around. Here you will find a big pile of freebies, a dance floor with a line-up of residents dancing in-sync, a second floor upon which many events and games are held (see previous posts here and here), and most importantly, newbie-friendly residents who love nothing better than to help you get started on your Second Life. I well remember the confusion I experienced when I first logged in, and the daunting task of figuring it all out. I think I can safely say that had it not been for the help and kindness shown by the amazing folks at The Shelter, I may not have stuck around long enough to realize the potential of SL.

That's my recommendation, and I'm sticking to it. Part of what keeps SL a fun place in which to play is the continuing efforts on all our parts to treat newbies well, and educate them on proper behavior; The Shelter is the first place a new user ought to visit. Next Newbie Tip: Exploring the Inventory.

P.S.: although it's obscured by a big table, the bottom part of the large sign on the back wall reads 'Welcome Home'. See? That tells you everything you need to know.
